What is Energy Healing?

Updated: Aug 6, 2023

The term "energy healing" is becoming more and more common in conversation, with many people rediscovering ancient healing modalities.

But what exactly IS energy healing, and how can I experience it?

Let's break it down because context is important.

There is a force within us that keeps our physical body alive - a subtle energy known as prana. The Sanskrit word prana is usually translated as "life force" or "vital energy" in English, "chi" in Chinese, or the Japanese word "ki".

Prana flows through the body in subtle energy channels called nadis (the same way blood flows through the veins). Approximately 72,000 nadis crisscross throughout the body. You can think of them as roads on an energy highway system. The traffic on the roads is your prana. When traffic flows freely, the system works well, but if a nadi becomes blocked, the flow of prana to that region of the body is reduced or cut off.

Without the nourishment of vital energy, that part of the body may weaken or become sick. For your body to be vibrantly healthy, a free flow of prana is necessary. One way to encourage this is through breathing exercises and different energy healing modalities. The point where two or more nadis meet in the body forms a junction of energy known as a chakra (Sanskrit word for "wheel"). For more, see: The Seven Major Chakras.

Now that we've covered the basics, let's delve a little deeper.

Energy healing is a subtle process of moving and transforming energy throughout the body and physical spaces. It is an alternative healing modality that is based on the principle that all living beings have an energy field, which can become imbalanced or blocked, and can lead to physical, emotional, or mental health issues. Energy healers use various techniques to help restore balance and flow to the energy field to promote healing and well-being.

There are many different ways to heal energy. Some of the most common practices include Reiki, acupuncture, acupressure, chakra balancing, pranayama (breathwork) and frequency healing. Practitioners may use their hands, tools or instruments, and most importantly, their intention to channel healing energy into the recipient's energy field, with the goal of removing blockages and restoring balance.

An energy healing practitioner rebalances the body’s energies and activate the body’s intrinsic healing process so that the body can better heal itself.

Anyone can also practice energy healing right at home. Here are some ideas to do just that:

  • Have a relaxing bath with epsom salt, candels, and frequency (hertz) music

  • Have a shower and visualize the water cleansing your energetic body, washing away all worry, doubt, fear, and low vibrational thoughts.

  • Start your day with a grounding meditation and deep breathing for 5-10 minutes.

  • Practice gratitude in the morning, and affirm to yourself that you will not be angry, you won’t worry, and you will be kind and grateful throughout the day.

The science.

Scientists began to recognize that everything in the Universe is made out of energy. Quantum physicists discovered that physical atoms are made up of vortices of energy that are constantly spinning and vibrating, each one radiating its own unique energy signature. For example, a solid table is constantly vibrating due to the presence of molecules.

Even humans are always in a state of vibration. Your thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and attitudes are all made of energy - and different emotions vibrate at a different frequency. Your "vibe" or vibration is a fancy way of describing your overall state of being. Everything in the Universe is made up of energy vibrating at different frequencies.

Map of Consciousness

David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D., an internationally renowned spiritual teacher, psychiatrist, physician, researcher, and developer of the widely-known Map of Consciousness, presents a diagram of vibrational states of being in his book Power vs. Force. This diagram matches the vibrational frequency of its corresponding emotion. He mentions that 99% of the world’s population is living at a contracted frequency (below 200). Thus, the vast majority of humanity is either suffering or just getting by.

To live in flow state, to experience love and inner peace - you need to raise your vibration. Your vibration must match the experiences you wish to attract.

“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.”
— Nikola Tesla

Energy healing is for everyone.

Energy healing is gaining popularity due to an increase of people experiencing stress and anxiety in our modern, fast-paced society. Many people find energy healing to be a helpful complement to traditional medical treatments, and some report feeling significant improvements in their physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health as a result of energy healing sessions.

If you feel stressed, physically drained, burned out, disconnected, are having trouble sleeping, or if you're simply seeking more balance in your life, energy healing may be a great tool for you help you.
